AFS Releases 2nd Annual Fitness Studio
Operating & Financial Benchmarking Research Report

Key Finding: AFS Members Earn $31,000 More Than Non-Members (EBITDA)

(OAKLAND, CA, November 28, 2016) – The Association of Fitness Studios (AFS) announced today the release of the 2nd annual financial research study on the American fitness studio market.  The 2016 Fitness Studio Operating & Financial Benchmarking Report was conducted over a three-month period earlier this year.

The study builds on the 2015 Report that, for the first time in the fitness industry, identified and measured key financial elements of the studio business, with insight narrative provided by ClubIntel, the study’s author.

“We’re starting to develop data that we can compare year-to-year to see trends as they develop,” said Josh Leve, AFS founder and CEO. “The information contained in this Report can be used by studios, aspiring studio owners, and industry suppliers. We’re proud to present it to the fitness industry.”

The Report identifies key data to answer fundamental questions to positively impact the bottom line for studio owners.  Among the key findings:

  • Average annual revenue is unchanged ($295,325)
  • Average retention rate up over previous year (14%)
  • AFS members are twice as profitable as non-members (EBITDA)
  • Average annual spend on equipment ($9,489)
  • How much trainers are being paid ($38.74/hour)
  • Plus, 70 pages full of great additional nuggets of data

The fitness studio business is generally acknowledged as the fastest growing segment of the fitness facility industry.  Prior to the AFS studies, owners, investors and marketers were dependent on anecdotal and unsubstantiated information.  Now there’s real data.

Also part of the release of this ground breaking research report, is AFS' new video series The Latest Studio Research and How to Apply It, including six 10-minute segments on everything a current or aspiring owner needs to know, presented by AFS Advisory Council member Stephen Tharrett.
