History
Sports & Fitness Insurance Corporation (SFIC) was founded in 1985 to help locally owned health clubs obtain general liability insurance that they could afford. In 1985 Nautlius was launching a leasing program for their strength equipment and found that many independently owned clubs were not carrying liability insurance because it was either not available or not affordable. John Urmston, the Chief Operating Officer of Nautilus, reached out to Glynne Simpson, who insured 1,000,000 square feet of manufacturing for Nautilus at the time. Simpson developed customized General Liability insurance policies for the fitness industry that local operators could afford and founded SFIC. Simpson exhibited at IHRSA and started growing the company.
Today, SFIC is one of the largest fitness underwriting companies in the nation, with about 25 people on staff at the company headquarters in Madison, Mississippi as well as an office in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company is licensed in all 50 states, has over 14,000 active policies for health clubs and individual trainers & yoga instructors nationwide, and is endorsed by a number of industry partners and franchises, including Curves for Women.
John Urmston’s daughter, Jennifer Urmston Lowe, remains with SFIC as their National Accounts Manager, and Simpson is still active in the business he started. For over 30 years now, SFIC has focused solely on the health & fitness industry. Simpson has continuously refined a unique comprehensive general liability policy for fitness professionals, as well as, fitness studios and full service health clubs that is tailored to the unique needs of our industry. SFIC is the Managing General Agent for Liberty Mutual Insurance for the fitness industry, working with both Liberty Agents and Independent agents across the country.
