Amsterdam, June 2021 

A new global customer survey by Virtuagym of gyms, fitness studios and personal trainers has revealed the crucial role that fitness technology has played for fitness businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the key part it is predicted to have for the future of the industry.

The research, undertaken whilst much of the fitness industry was still closed, found that digital technology was vital in motivating and engaging members, during a period in which over two-thirds (69%) had to close their doors for at least three months.

Summer is here, and that means our clients are away on vacation--rather than going into the gym or keeping those personal training appointments. Unfortunately, that also means paused memberships and trainers who we’re paying...but who aren’t actually bringing in revenue.

Once again the trends in the Fitness Industry have taken market analysts by surprise. Two big opportunities have surfaced in March and April and now are commanding a good share of the fitness market. The first is Digital Fitness and the second is Garage Gyms.

Bernhard Mehl, an entrepreneurial coach and ergonomics engineer, in a recent article on KISIblog, says that after COVID appeared, the fitness industry, and especially location-based businesses, dropped as much as 10 billion in the year following the onset of the pandemic.
